Thanks to Gazprom sponsoring, Paeffgen gets the ruble rolling

Gazprom will be the new main sponsor of Football Bundesliga's FC Schalke 04. The Russian gas monopolist and the football club  indebted with more than 200 million Euros arranged a sponsoring agreement with an agreed term from January 2007 thru June 2012.

According to experts in the sector, irrespective of sports performance, Schalke will generate at least 60 million Euros with this contract which is the most lucrative contract in the Bundesliga's history. On the basis of certain successes in sports, the world's largest natural gas company's commitment will even yield 125 million Euros to the club.

As early as January, Gazprom will take over jersey advertising for the current season; the present jersey partner Victoria Insurance will merely be a co-sponsor in the future. To date, Schalke received 7.5 million Euros per season. Gazprom will also advertise in the stadium, without, however, involving itself in club politics. (René Bender)

Gazprom counsel:
IN-HOUSE (St. Petersburg): Maxim Pogorelow

Schalke 04 counsel:
PAEFFGEN (Bonn): Theo Paeffgen, Associates: Michael Steinsieck, Christian Eustermann

For the better of three years, Theo Paeffgen already is counsel for Schalke. Back then he advised the club on the first ticket securitization in German football (JUVE 06/03). Initial contact was made via the American banker Stephen Schechter, whom Paeffgen has gotten to know from previous mandates, and who is notorious in Britain for football securitizations.

Since then, the law firm continues to advise FC Schalke 04, with a focus on corporate finance. Just last year, the firm counseled the Club in financing and refinancing as well as on the Sponsorship agreement and the naming rights of Schalke's "Veltins-Arena". The law firm also handles the international player transfers for the Gelsenkirchen club."
